The Green Package

Like many Americans I’m concerned about the current state of environmental issues and am always on the lookout for ways that I can make small changes both personally and with my business to help make positive changes.   Living in and doing business as a wedding photographer in Colorado the beauty of our environment is something I value greatly.  So to move in the right direction I sold my gas guzzling 4×4 for a little station wagon that gets over double the mileage and now I’m introducing the Green Package.

So what does the “Green Package” entail?

Well for starters it includes many of the basics from all my coverage options.

  • Complimentary engagement session
  • 8 hours coverage by myself and an associate photographer
  • 50-100 photos per coverage hour
  • Disc with all images sized for printing and a personal use print release

For proofs on this package I’ll be using the iPad option.   No boxes of 4×6 proofs and all the paper and chemicals associated with that.

A few other things of note about the iPad is that it embodies Apple’s latest environmental progress in production.  It is designed with many features to reduce environmental impact:

  • Arsenic-free display glass
  • BFR-free
  • Mercury-free LCD display
  • PVC-free
  • Recyclable aluminum and glass enclosure

The “Green Collection” also comes with an album.   A 100 page “Iceland” book from Couture books Earth Collection.

The earth collection is printed on 100% post-consumer recycled acid-free archival paper and utilizes environmentally sensitive materials.  The entire printing process is powered by green-e certified windpower.  Carbon offsets and trees are planted with a portion of the proceeds of each book by the printer.

The “Iceland” features

  • A full bleed printed cover with image(s) from your wedding
  • 100% recycled paper.

For the 2010 season total cost of the Green Package will start at $4000.

Marianne and Daniel – January 2nd 2010

Well 2010 got off to an amazing start for a simple Colorado wedding photographer like myself with a wonderful wedding on the 2nd of January.  It was cold but warmed a bit from the sub zero temps just days before and the skies where clear.

Assisting me on this one was Dain of Photography by Dain.   We have a lot of weddings booked together this year and it was a great way to hit the ground running this year for us as a regular team.

Marianne and Daniel had a beautiful ceremony at the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Denver right next to city park.

In order to make the days schedule flow smoother and handle the family photos before the ceremony Marianne and Daniel decided to see each other before the ceremony – so we setup a “first look” moment for them once they where dressed and ready.   This is just a great moment for the couple to savor the moment together of seeing each other for the first time that day.

And of course we had to do some photos with those amazing stained glass windows.

Then is was time for guests and a wonderful ceremony.

After the couple sped away in their limo we met up with them at their reception, but that will be another post later today.

First Look

It’s not uncommon for a couple to break traditional a little and see each other before the ceremony on their wedding day.  It often helps with the scheduling of the day as well as the stress – after all don’t you want to spend more time with that special person on your wedding day.

Of course I still love setting up the “first look” for couples when they choose this option.   It’s allows them to still savor that first glance on each other and it makes a great moment to capture in photos or build into an album spread.

Wei and Vicky’s Engagement Celebration

Most of the time when a wedding photographer does an engagement session with a couple it’s an afternoon shooting with the two of them coming up with some cute pictures somewhere.  When Wei and Vicky contacted they explained this might be a little different than what I was used to.   The celebration would start at their church, the family would offer words of advice and best wishes, starting with the eldest from each side and working towards the youngest, and then a celebration lunch.   Oh and most everybody would be speaking in chinese.   Fortunately the time spent with them and their families reinforced the fact that family bonds, humor, tears of joy, and love transcend all language and are part of the human experience.

A Few More – Joe and Audrey's wedding at Phipps Mansion

Getting ready to pull these off to the archive drive and while I’ll do a bigger post next week I wanted to share a few more special photos from Joe and Audrey’s recent wedding at the Phipps Mansion Tennis Pavilion.

Of course one of the greatest things about my job is some of the wonderful people I get to work with that are also in the wedding photography business.  Dain Linder of Photography by Dain always being one of my favorites.   He’s a shot of my friend and more often than not shooting partner knocking out a few shots of the bride and her father.

Now despite my love of black and white photography there are some images that just need to be in color.   This amazing wedding cake with rings of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries is among the later.

During the ceremony when the focus is often on the bride and groom there’s often a wonderful shot just waiting on the sidelines.   Here the father and mother of the groom look on at the start of the ceremony.

Earlier this year I had the amazing privilege to attend a talk in Denver hosted by one of my greatest photographic inspirations, Joe Buissink.   He gave a quote during that discussion that really had me thinking.   This probably isn’t exact but it was along the lines of “It’s not about the perfect image, it’s about the perfect moment”.  And it’s these moments that I love the most.

Here Audrey and her father during the father daughter dance.  Only the two of them know what was said to make her laugh so, but when she looks at this image ten years from now she’ll be brought back to that moment.

Henri Cartier-Bresson once said, “We photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing, and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth can make them come back again. We cannot develop and print a memory.”

This above all else is what I strive to give my clients on their wedding day, not just the beautifully posed portraits but more importantly capturing the fleeting moments and emotions of the day.

Until next time,
