Wagon Trails – DFL Raises almost 90,000 for the animals

A few weekends back I volunteered my time to work a photo station for the Dumb Friends League Wagon Trails fund raising event to benefit their Castle Rock shelter, The Buddy Center.  Looks like they raised almost $90,000 for the day so it was definitely a great way to spend the day.

They had three photo stations setup on the trail, one of the others was manned by my good friend and fellow photographer Dain from Photography by Dain.

Down in the vendor area was another good friend, and who I think is one of Colorados best pet photographers, Jaime Rowe.

Here’s a few shots from my station:

Catfest – Help Support the Dumb Friends League animal shelter with photographer Jaime Rowe

Most people know I spent 15 years working for the largest (and in my opinion one of the absolute best) animal welfare organizations in the rocky mountain region, the Dumb Friends League. After 15 years the place is more family than just a former employer and love to help them out whenever they ask.

So it was with no little disappointment that when they asked if I would be  setting up a booth on their Catfest event on July 11th and I had to decline. Being a wedding photographer here in Colorado summer Saturdays are more often than not booked with a wedding, and this was the case.

So not being able to attend I opted for the next best thing, and that was putting them in touch with whom I think is one of the best pet photographers I’ve ever met, Jaime Rowe.

Jaime isn’t one to photograph your loved pet like you’ve seen at certain “pet supermarkets” on their photography days where they setup a mini-set and then production line the dogs and cats.   While these “production lines” do a fair job of documenting what your pet looks like, that’s about it.   Jaime Rowe’s photography is focused on capturing your pets “purr-sonality”.   OK, I’m sorry for that pun, I did mention 15 years at a shelter right?

Described as a modern pet photographer I think of what she does as lifestyle pet photography.   She doesn’t put your pet in a “mini set” where  she can capture their looks, but rather works with them (and you) on location to capture the personality of your dog or cat, that part of them that makes them a part of your family.

I’m told that if you book one of Jaime’s “Close to Home Packages” during this event 5% of the proceeds goes to the Dumb Friends League.

So go check out Jaime’s blog http://jaimerowephotography.blogspot.com/ and website http://www.jaimerowephotography.com/ and I have no doubt you’ll see just what a gifted artist Jaime is.   Then head on down to the League and support the animals by indulging in some outstanding photography.

2009 Pet Photo Calendar – Dumb Friends League

It’s been something of a tradition over the last few years that I help judge the calendar contest over at the Dumb Friends League, happily this tradition didn’t end when I left my employment after 15 years there this last January.  In addition I was honored to help out in shooting the cover image.

The cover of the calendar is an item auctioned off at a fund raising silent auction.  The generous supporters who won this auction didn’t have any suitable photographs of this pair of ragdolls so asked the League to arrange the photographs.

These calendars will be available for purchase for $15 from the shops in both shelters of the League after November 12th.  You can find a mail/fax order for here: http://www.ddfl.org/forms/calendar-order.pdf

It’s a great way to support a wonderful organization.

May Studio Specials

For the month of May I’m throwing myself back deep into the dog world again by not only volunteering my time for the Dumb Friends League fundraiser, Furry Scurry, but also by offering a pet photo discount in memory of my dog Luna who passed away last February.

During the month of May the normal session fee for pet photography is slashed from $50 to $20 (enough to cover travel expenses for the location shoots).
Our lab print costs are reasonable so the money you save on the
session can get you a large selection of various sized prints.

These sessions can be at the studio or I can pack up the gear and come to you.
I will encourage you to pose for a few photos with your pet for a
Relationships” style images as well.

Additionally if you have either your bib or T-shirt from this years
furry scurry you’ll receive a coupon code for 10% off your print order through the online proofing gallery.

Relationships

I’ve been studying a few new portrait styles, one of them, relationships, captures the connection between the people in the image. It didn’t take me long to realize I’d been shooting this “new style” for a few years at my old job, only we called it Pets with People instead of Relationship photography.

It’s all about the connection….

Relationships portraiture is usually a fine art B&W that captures some of the emotion between the subjections. Often used for children’s portraits with their parents or grandparents. ?

Of course at the Dumb Friends League we’d been doing “People and Animal” shots for years. I plan on offering this style for pet portraits as well as family sessions.
