Some New Blog Bling

Recently I shared with everyone that I had placed in the top 10 in the emotions category of a competition for the AGWPJA / Artisan Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association.

Well I just recently found out that after ranking in one of their competitions I get to use some new banners on my site.

A Taste of Dunafon Castle

Last week Dunafon Castle hosted their 2nd  ”A Taste of Dunafon Castle” event, a great chance for clients planning on using the castle as their wedding venue to get together and mingle with some of the castle’s preferred vendors.   I love this since it’s such a great time to mingle with what in many cases are already my clients in the venue well before the actual wedding day.

Of course even at dusk in the middle of winter Dunafon Castle has such a beauty quite unlike any other venue I’ve worked before.

and of course some people just fell under the castles spell of beauty and romance in the cold night.

Also wanted to give a little shout out to the other wonderful wedding vendors in attendance this night.

Friday Favorites – Top 10 award winning international competition

Long time readers of the blog might remember last year when I was accepted into two organizations, the WPJA or Wedding Photojournalist Association, and it’s sister organization the AGWPJA or Artisan Guild of theWedding Photojournalist Association.

One of the benefits of being a member of these prestigious organizations is the quarterly photo contest they each run.  A variety of categories is selected and hundreds of the top wedding photojournalist professionals around the world enter works conforming to each category.   This is not only a great chance to share my work and let it be judged  but to then see some of the best images on these types when the winners are announced is always such a great inspiration.

Now for a simple Denver wedding photographer putting my work up against some of the best wedding photojournalists in the world is a tad intimidating.  But to have an image selected from amongst such competition would be such a great honor it would be worth the effort.

The AG/WPJA just announced the results of their 2009 4th quarter competition and I’m very pleased to announce that one of my pieces placed in the top 10 for the “Emotions” category.

This image from Joe and Audrey’s wedding at the Phipps Mansion Tennis Pavilion was my entry for the Emotion category.  The bride is so full of emotion and while only her and her father know what was said to elicit such emotion, I have no doubt that looking back years from now she’ll remember when she looks at this photo.

It would seem the judges agree with the impact of this photo and it placed 8th in the competition.

A Few More – Joe and Audrey's wedding at Phipps Mansion

Getting ready to pull these off to the archive drive and while I’ll do a bigger post next week I wanted to share a few more special photos from Joe and Audrey’s recent wedding at the Phipps Mansion Tennis Pavilion.

Of course one of the greatest things about my job is some of the wonderful people I get to work with that are also in the wedding photography business.  Dain Linder of Photography by Dain always being one of my favorites.   He’s a shot of my friend and more often than not shooting partner knocking out a few shots of the bride and her father.

Now despite my love of black and white photography there are some images that just need to be in color.   This amazing wedding cake with rings of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries is among the later.

During the ceremony when the focus is often on the bride and groom there’s often a wonderful shot just waiting on the sidelines.   Here the father and mother of the groom look on at the start of the ceremony.

Earlier this year I had the amazing privilege to attend a talk in Denver hosted by one of my greatest photographic inspirations, Joe Buissink.   He gave a quote during that discussion that really had me thinking.   This probably isn’t exact but it was along the lines of “It’s not about the perfect image, it’s about the perfect moment”.  And it’s these moments that I love the most.

Here Audrey and her father during the father daughter dance.  Only the two of them know what was said to make her laugh so, but when she looks at this image ten years from now she’ll be brought back to that moment.

Henri Cartier-Bresson once said, “We photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing, and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth can make them come back again. We cannot develop and print a memory.”

This above all else is what I strive to give my clients on their wedding day, not just the beautifully posed portraits but more importantly capturing the fleeting moments and emotions of the day.

Until next time,
